I am in agony.

Well, the outcome of my appointment was a new tooth to put under my pillow for zee Tooth Fairy. I joked about how maybe instead of a ragged ass dollar bill, perhaps I’d receive a new car. One can dream!

I do know that I am not looking forward to having my other teeth removed. The pain from this has been unbearable and I really just want to knock myself out so I don’t have to deal with the throbbing pain that is the right side of my jaw.

Originally the appointment was just to check out the problem, and then get my teeth cleaned. Well, after looking at the xrays the pain I originally had wasn’t going to go away. The tooth was slightly impacted, and needed to be removed asap. She ended up doing it right then and there. And it sucked.

First she gave me some local numbing, then Novocaine, then some more Novocaine. I really can’t tell you much of what was going on because I had my eyes closed shut, and my hands were gripping the arms of the chair as if I was going to die if I fell out of it.

The tooth was only partially erupted so she had to cut away the gums to expose the tooth (painful) and then for about 30 minutes there was a lot of scraping, yanking, pulling, suctioning, and god knows what else. At one point I finally felt a really painful tear, but didn’t think it had been the tooth. I thought maybe she made it more loose, but apparently that was when she got it. After that she basically cut the membrane (much like an umbilical cord, thanks to the person assisting her) and I was all done.

I ended up getting a prescription for vicodin, some gauze pads, and my tooth. Needless to say I ended up going to bed around 8:30pm in absolute fucking pain. The vicodin I took didn’t do shit for me, so that pissed me off even more. I was scared to even consider taking more aspirin because I didn’t want to overload my body with drugs to the point where I foam at the mouth and die from choking on my own vomit.

Woke up this morning with uhh, blood around my mouth. Wasn’t pleasant at all, when you also consider that I still had the taste of iron in my mouth. Yuuuck. Anyway, my jaw is still horribly sore, and it’s swollen. Feels like there’s a jawbreaker (hardy har har) embedded in my gums on the right side. My cheek is pretty puffy on that side too.

I’m still going to go into work–I just have way too much work on my plate right now to take today off. School might be out of the picture for today too, but I may just go in for a little bit, and then leave. We’ll see how I’m feeling later on tonight. Hopefully a lot better 🙁

Oh, the tooth she pulled was huge. It was about the length of a nickel.

  1. Ach, sorry to hear about your agony!! I was in your place before, and totally understand how you feel! I wasn’t sure if you had your wisdom teeth pulled though or not… but if it is, try to take some T3s… they help you sleep through the pain.
My tooth actually got infected so I had to go and get all 4 wisdom teeth pulled out using only asthetics… I thought that was sedation but was I wrong…

Hopefully you’ll be able to recover soon!

  2. wtf!!! Couldn’t she just refer you to an oral surgeon? That way they could have put you to sleep. My goodness you went thru a lot. At least the problem was rectified and you will feel better soon.

  3. Well, she gave me the option but as I am uninsured, I highly doubt that I’d be able to afford a bill from an oral surgery.

I’m sure it would’ve been a lot easier to go that way, and I would’ve had I of had insurance… But oh well!

  4. I cringed just reading this but at the same it really makes me anxious to get a tooth pulled. Do not ask me why, I just love visiting the dentist.

    Do enjoy the vicodin!

  5. I hate having to go to the dentist, mainly because it is so expensive. I got my wisdom teeth out in January and it was horrible, I bled for three days and I was on painkillers. It wasn’t so bad, until I got the bill.

  6. GOD. That’s awful, I fucking hate having to have teeth extracted. The last time I went, I had one wisdom tooth removed because I too felt the throbbing-jaw-pain-from-hell that doesn’t go away no matter what you do.

I had to pay for it myself because I wasn’t in school at the time and didn’t have dental insurance which sucked. I was miserable for like four days after, so I really hope it’s better for you than it was for me. There is nothing worse than mouth pain.

I suggest lots of ice cream, and episodes of Roseanne all day with lots of rest. Hope you feel better soon!

  7. Christ, that must’ve sucked. So sorry to hear that. Gotta say, it is better to have it out then in. At least now it won’t cause you any MORE pain then it already has. Just get through the pain from the extraction and after that, You’re good to go.

  8. I remember the constant pain from teeth…Wisdom teeth, Periodontal Disease, 3 more wisdom teeth. Vicodin always helped me, though, or at least gave me a floaty feeling where all I want to do is talk and then pass out. I’m glad you got your tooth out, though, the pain will be gone in a little while, and I hope you feel better.

  9. That sucks that you had to get a tooth taken out. But I just had four out a few weeks ago. But I only get 25 cents when I get a tooth taken out. At least I did when I was a kid. I haven’t put a tooth under my pillow since then.

Oh man, that sounded really painful and horrible! When they did mine they gave me something so I pretty much went to sleep and don’t remember anything and then they gave me drugs for the pain so I didn’t feel any pain at all for any of the teeth. And all of them were still under the gums, so I guess I was really lucky! Good luck with everything. I can’t believe you’re going to go to work and school after doing that. I took about 4 or 5 days off after mine were done.

  10. @Holly, that’s the one thing that pissed me off the most was that the Vicodin didn’t help at all! It didn’t make me feel woozy, didn’t feel high, didn’t make the pain go away. I’m glad I only paid $8.50 for 10 pills otherwise if I would’ve paid anymore than that, I’d have been even more outraged.

I’m just not looking forward to getting the other three removed 🙁 Hopefully by that time I’ll have dental insurance so I can just go see an oral surgeon.

  11. aaah! Your account was enough to make me flinch. I just had a dental appointment a week ago, but luckily it was just a cleaning, and for a dentist, mine is fairly gentle.

Although if I ever had a situation like that, they’re gonna have to drug me to the point of no return, and keep me that away for a week as I have a very low threshold for pain. ^^

  12. I hope you feel better soon. When I had mine out (I had 5 teeth) they put me under and I spent 2 days coughing up blood and not being able to eat or speak.

  13. Wow. Sounds like you went through alot. Just as Chanel said, she should have sent you to an oral surgeon for that. I got my wisdom teeth out a couple of years ago, and to be honest I feel pretty lucky, cause after it was done, it was DONE. I didn’t have any pain, nor even have to take the painkillers that were prescribed. The good thing is, though.. you’ll be back to yourself in no time and not have to worry about it or feel that horrible pain anymore.
