My boyfriend is going to be an old fart.

No, he’s not really, but I’ve been trying to think of a birthday gift for him because his 25th birthday is on May 31st. He reads my website so I’m not going to divulge much information, but one part I don’t mind him knowing about is a couple of shirts I’m thinking of getting him. The other day I was looking at Cyanide and Happiness when I decided to see what merch they had up. Saw the Bathroom t-shirt and knew that shirt was Mark, and that he needs to own it. I also want to order the Next-Gen Gaming t-shirt from splitreason.com because Mark’s been way obsessed with the Wii (more specifically Zelda: Twilight Princess, and now Super Paper Mario–speaking of which, he needs to finish it so I can borrow it!)

But I really want to do/make something creative for him but I have no idea where to start or even look. A few months ago I had made him a Bloo trashcan (from the tv show Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends) which I get to see every time I go over to his place… But anyway, I think I have an idea, though I’m not sure.

As far as baking goes, I know exactly what I’m going to do for his birthday cake. I’m a bit of a nut for baking, especially if it involves a cute boy named Mark, so I’m going to be recipe hunting as well as getting together some of the ingredients. Let’s just say it’s going to take a couple boxes of cake mix to be able to have the right amount of baked cake to create what I plan on doing.

What the hell is the internet.

I admit that I have a very stubborn personality that usually has a bit of pompous and smart ass trailing along behind it. Though there are times when I’m being honest, and genuine. Most of the times when I am nice, I’m usually mistaken for being a snotty bitch. Awhile ago I had a bit of a tiff with Jess of Lianhua.nu on a Lavish.nu thread where she was having WordPress issues on the server her account is on. I wasn’t trying to be rude or condescending but as usual when it comes to offer advice I apparently sounded so and she wasn’t pleased with it. Add in a few other replies to miscellaneous threads and I’m sure that my replies didn’t disprove that I was a bitch. Needless to say after my post, Do-It-Yourself Web Hosts: worth it?, she replied to my reply of her comment and I believe things are now cleared up. Which is nice, because contrary to popular belief, I don’t like having grudges against people, nor do I like having people dislike me for the wrong reason.

Go figure that I get things cleared up with her, other shit hits the fan. I’ve been posting a lot lately on Snark MB (Cupcakes), and recently replied to a thread “Advertising on Personal Websites” which included some mentions of Theblogworld.net and PJmommy.com. (See, I link websites because I know people are going to click them, and I know that the aforementioned people have an analytic stats program tracking their hits, so I’m not being vague or “behind their backs.”)

One of the questions that were on the little survey was “Are ads ok as long as they are *not* on the blog/main site?” My reply to that question was:”

I think ads are best when they don’t interfere with the content of the site. One site that [did] the worst job possible was pjmommy.com but it looks like she’s changed how the ads appear on her site. At one point there was an ad after every entry. I still think her site is bollocks because of the disgusting amount of PPP crap all over it. Theblogworld.net is another “perfect” example of what not to do. She has keyword ads set up on the site. Very. Very. Very. Annoying.

Eruanna.net has fallen victim as well. I never really expected her site to start in with it.

This didn’t settle well with Amanda of TBW because I soon received an e-mail where she said, “–might be nice to say I am not fond of the Kontera ads on the blogworld instead of bashing it on the net.” As well as going on to say “Please don’t bash without asking… Please be wary next time you give a review on my site make sure its accurate with information not that I have fallen victim but am testing out for readers.”

Oh, and Han (eruanna.net) has been the only person that has been rational and mature in seeing what I said, since I just read her entry, “Ads, Smudge and a fuck off huge TV!” where she asks her readers for their opinion about the ads.

So to say here too (even though I left a comment at her site) I mentioned Han’s site in the comment as more of a “I never expected her site,” and not so much related to the actual question about the ads haven’t a negative affect on the content/blog.

Do-It-Yourself Web Hosts: worth it?

Over the past few months I’ve come across a slight trickle of people that have started up their own “web hosting company.” I’m all for trying out new things to help people, bring in money, or to just have a project. But I’ve noticed that most of these people have been under the age of twenty.

I’d be a hypocrite if I said that people under twenty should not start up their own “business” considering when I started Holdfire Network I was 19 years old, and pretty soon I’m going to be 21. The age is just a mere statistic from the smaller web hosts that have popped up. But if you’re going to school full-time and working as well, how do you expect to manage your clientèle? Who is going to be there to answer their ticket at 3am? Or 4pm? Or 10pm?

However the age group from most of the web hosts weren’t even something I took into consideration. Almost all of them were missing main elements that make up a web host company. The following are based off of 7 web hosts that I have come across through people’s websites, and various message boards. They are not linked within this entry, however if someone requests them in a comment, I’ll be more than willing to reply with them.

It’s true, smiles can melt your heart.

So, it’s finally happened. My heart officially melted from a smile. Yup, you heard it right. Tonight I was over at Mark’s house just to see him for awhile (because I kind of love seeing him a lot) and at one point I was laying on my side hovering over him, and he looked up at me and had the cutest smile ever. To top it off he smiled that smile not once, but thrice and did that really cute innocent voice that made my cold heart pitter patter just a bit faster. It’s permanently embedded in my head, and I will always replay it whenever I need to cheer up. Mark is by far the best person to come into my life, when I needed him the most.

Two more days until Blue Man Group, and Thursday is shopping with my grandma. Hopefully I can persuade her into letting me get my hair cut/colored. I’ve got three different outgrowth colors, and split ends like nobody’s business. Any ideas for colors? See my about page to get a picture of what I look like. My complexion is usually slightly tan, though my skin tone is more on the lighter side of the spectrum despite the fact that I’m part Mexican.

Websites that you need to have bookmarked.

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been saving a lot of sites to del.icio.us and majority of them have been applications, tips and tricks, and resource websites. Since I have so many, I felt that it would be a nice side project to play with. So for the next week or two I shall be posting about one-two websites a day (or at least try to) and give a short review and examples of what they can do.

Today I’m going to just post something small and simple… I’m sure you’ve noticed around the web the infamous famfamfam.com “silk” icons used in blogs, applications, and pretty much anything else that they can be “stuck on.” So lately I’ve been looking for a replacement to kind of get away from them and try out something new. My problem is that I don’t like creating my own icons, so I had to find them elsewhere.

Somehow I ended up coming across Sweetie – Cute and Clear Icons. The base package includes 156 transparent PNG icons. Some of the icons included are: heartlargered24-member.png24-book-red-add.png24-tag-add.png

Even though they’re a little bit more glossy than I’d like, I might try integrating into some of my other sites to see just how well they work. If you’re looking for a nice set of royalty-free stock icons, I’d highly suggest checking out Iconshoppe.com. My favorite set there that I plan on purchasing is the Stockholm.
